Win Streak Ends At Five For Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Fort Myers Groupers saw their season-high five-game winning streak come to an end with an 8-2 loss on Saturday night to the Lakeland Flying Tigers.

The game was delayed for one hour and 23 minutes prior to first pitch due to inclement weather.

Scoreless in the fourth, Lakeland broke the deadlock with a four-run inning. Cole Peterson and A.J. Simcox each collected RBI's before Derek Hill delivered a two-out, two-run single to give Lakeland a 4-0 lead.

The Flying Tigers added four more runs in the fifth to push the lead to 8-0 on a Peterson run scoring single and a Simcox three-run home run.

The Groupers got on the board in the seventh on a two-run home run off the bat of Ben Rortvedt. The former second round pick (2016 draft) has collected at least one RBI in four straight games.

Groupers starter Andro Cutura (3-5) suffered the loss after allowing four runs in 3.2 innings of work. The right-hander allowed six hits. Ryan Mason followed and yielded four runs in 1.1 innings of relief. Adam Bray and Hector Lujan each tossed two scoreless innings.

Spencer Turnbull made a rehab start for the Flying Tigers. The right-hander collected a no decision. He pitched 4.2 scoreless innings. Spenser Watkins (7-3) earned the win after pitching the game's final 4.1 innings. He allowed two runs.

After a league wide off day on Sunday, the Groupers open a three-game series on Monday against the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Miami Marlins.
