Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Adonis Medina matched a career high with 12 strikeouts on Saturday night, mowing through the Fire Frogs order to pave the way for Clearwater's 2-1 victory over Florida on Scout Night at Spectrum Field.
Medina permitted two singles with two outs in the first, and did not allow a baserunner the rest of the way. The right-hander retired 19 straight to close out his day, and struck out seven of the final eight batters against him.
Medina would not factor in the decision, but tied a season-most with seven scoreless innings, yielding only two hits while racking up 12 strikeouts - the most for a Thresher since Jesse Biddle struck out 12 against the Brevard County Manatees on August 17, 2012.
The Threshers (17-12) (49-48) struck first in the bottom of the first inning off Florida starter Jeremy Walker.
After Jose Gomez singled up the middle and stole second, Mickey Moniak hit a comebacker that resulted in a rundown, with Gomez tagged out. Moniak would later take second on a wild pickoff move from Walker.
With two outs, Jose Pujols lined a single to left to plate Moniak ahead of the throw from left fielder Jared James, giving the Threshers a 1-0 lead.
Medina exited with Clearwater up 1-0, but Florida (14-16) (43-53) rallied back to tie it in the eighth. Grant Dyer (1-1) retired the first two quickly, before Kevin Josephina singled to center to snap a streak of 21 straight set down by Threshers pitching.
After a eight-pitch battle, Lucas Herbert doubled off the right field wall to plate Josephina, tying the game at one.
Clearwater cashed in on an error to bounce back in front in the home half.
After Kevin Markham was hit by a pitch from reliever Brandon White (1-2), Gomez put down a sacrifice to move him to second. Moniak lined out to left, and Henri Lartigue pulled a grounder to second which was bobbled and then thrown away by Josephina for an error, allowing Markham to score what would be the game-winning run.
Jakob Hernandez took it the rest of the way, tossing a perfect ninth to earn his second save.
After an off day on Sunday, the Threshers hit the road for a three-game series at St. Lucie. First pitch in game one is set for 6:30 p.m. on Monday with Alejandro Requena on the bump.
