Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Just a few days after signing with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Cosmo Wilson had the opportunity to suit up in his first Western Hockey League game.

The 16-year-old defenceman handled himself well while making the jump from U18 AAA to the WHL.

"Definitely surreal, so fun," Wilson said on Monday. "Got the nerves on me a bit, but after the first, it was fine."

Wilson signed his WHL standard player agreement on Wednesday and make the quick turnaround to hit the ice with the Warriors on Saturday against the Wheat Kings in Brandon.

Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said Wilson performed above expectations with just a week of practice under his belt with the team.

"He really understands the game," he said. "He certainly has the coaches excited about his potential."

With the Warriors down two regular defenceman, the organization added Wilson to help fill the gap until Captain Daemon Hunt and Max Wanner can return to the lineup.

Wilson posted six goals and 12 points in 34 games with the Okanagan Rockets in the BC Elite Hockey League under-18 AAA division this season. He also suited up in seven games with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL this season.

Wilson said he felt like he was able to put together a solid game in his debut.

"I had to adjust a little bit coming from under-18 to WHL, it was a big jump," he said.

"Everything is faster in the dub compared to even Junior A and then more physical obviously with bigger guys... I think I handled it pretty well."

O'Leary said Wilson played to his strengths.

"Between his ability to make quick plays with his head up and his willingness to compete in one-on-one situations, I thought he had a great game," he said.

The Warriors came out on the losing end, falling 3-2 in a shootout to the Wheat Kings.

Wilson said capitalizing on the team's chances will be key going to Brandon again on Tuesday.

"Just putting the puck in the net, we had tons of chances there, we were in the o zone for a good part of the first and most of the second, so we just have to execute," he said.

The Warriors will battle the Wheat Kings on Tuesday night in Brandon to kick-off the final week of the regular season.
