Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, announced today that alumnus and former captain Nick Cicek has signed a two-year, NHL contract with the San Jose Sharks.
Cicek, 21, initially signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Barracuda, American Hockey League affiliate of the Sharks, last summer and is currently enjoying a strong rookie campaign. Consistently playing on the team's top defensive pairing, Cicek has produced 22 points in 43 games to lead all Barracuda defensemen. Cicek quickly earned the respect of his coaches and teammates and was even given an "A" at the midway point of his first professional season, representing the Barracuda as one of their alternate captains.
The Winnipeg, Man. native captained the Winterhawks during the 2020-21 season and he led all Hawks defensemen with 21 points in 24 games. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound defenseman played in 138 career WHL games, all with Portland, tallying nine goals and 39 assists for 48 points.
He was also a key member of the Winterhawks 2019-20 team during his 19-year-old season that won the Scotty Munro Trophy as the WHL's Regular Season Champions. Cicek was originally selected by the Winterhawks in seventh-round of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.
