Wilson Tobs News Release

WILSON, NC- The Wilson Tobs have the Peninsula Pilots number this season. The Tobs won again against the team from Hampton Virginia, improving their season record to 3-0 against the Pilots. The Tobs benefited from two big innings a seven run eruption in the second inning and a four run fourth that doomed Peninsula.

The second inning began with a leadoff triple by Jeff Kremer. Ryan Mathews followed with a walk, which brought up Alex Jones. Jones laced the first pitch from Peninsula starter Patrick Scoggin (1-1) into left field for a single, scoring Kremer and Mathews advanced to second base. The next man up was Angelo LaBruna who sacrificed bunted the base runners to second and third, and was the first out of the inning. Joe Costigan singled to center, which brought home Mathews and moved Jones to third base. Zac Mitchell doubled home Jones, and Costigan stopped at third base. Steve Nikorak made sure no one would get held up at third when he took the 2-2 pitch and hit it over the fence in left field for his third homerun of the year. At this point it was a six run inning for the Tobs. Two batters later, Tony Wieber added a homer to left his first on the campaign. That capped the seven-run second inning, and to the departure of starter Scoggin, but the Tobs were not done.

The fourth inning saw eight Tobs come to the plate. With one out, Mitchell and Nikorak walked setting the table for Ryan Daughtry. Daughtry promptly singled home Mitchell and then took second base on the throw to the plate. Two hitters later with runners on second and third and two outs, Mathews delivered a double into the gap in left-center field which cleared the bases. That made the score Wilson 11 and Peninsula 1.

The Tobs added one more in the sixth on a Kremer RBI double capping the Tobs scoring at 12. The Tobs had Brice Rivenbark on the mound for them Thursday night. Rivenbark pitched eight innings allowing two earned runs, allowing only two walks, and striking out a season best eleven Peninsula batters. Rivenbark earned the win and is now (2-1) on the season and leads the Coastal Plain League in strikeouts with 36.

The Pilots added three runs in the ninth to make the final score Wilson 12 and Peninsula 5. The attendance at Fleming Stadium was 1375 and the game was played in two hours and twenty-seven minutes.

The Wilson Tobs are in action again tomorrow night in Petersburg, Virginia. The Tobs will take on the Generals at 7:05 PM. No starting-pitching match up has been decided at this time.
