Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - Dave Bartuska shut-out the Forest City Owls for seven innings, picking up his first win of the season. Edenton (10-4) cruised to a 6-0 win to exact some revenge for the loss to Forest City (9-7) in last season's Pettit Cup championship series.
Bartuska squared off against right-handed pitcher Andrew Brown for the Owls. Bartuska and Brown matched zeros through the first three innings of the game.
In the bottom of the fourth Edenton broke through when Ryan Brenner walked to begin the inning. Brenner stole second base with Wendle at the plate and then promptly stole third base. He came home to score on a throwing error charged to P.J Torres, the Owls catcher to give the Steamers a 1-0 lead.
The Owls were bit by the error bug again in the bottom of the fifth after Bartuska retired the Owls one, two, three in the top half of the fifth. Nick Gaeta reached on an error to start the inning. Brett Christopher then singled Gaeta to third and Ryan Brenner dropped down an infield single that scored Gaeta. On the play there was a throwing error by the first baseman Dusty Quattlebaum that allowed Christopher to score to give Edenton a 3-0 lead and moved Brenner to second base.
Two more errors led to another Steamer run in the bottom of the sixth. Vinnie Mejia walked and moved to second base on an error by the first baseman Quattlebaum. Adam Giacalone reached on an error that allowed Mejia to score and the Steamers were out to a commanding 4-0 lead.
Adam Giacalone connected on his first home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth, a crush job over the left center field fence to bring the lead to 6-0 Steamers.
Bartuska pitched seven shut-out innings in the winning effort, moving to 1-1 on the season and the bullpen combination of David Teasley, Dustin Quattrocchi and Jordan Moore held the Owls scoreless over the final two frames to seal the Steamers fourth win in a row.
Andrew Brown fell to 0-1 after pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three hits, four runs (two earned), he walked one and struck out four. Forest City committed five errors in loss as well.
Edenton travels to Hampton, VA to take on the closest follower in the North Division, the Peninsula Pilots tomorrow night at War Memorial Stadium.
