High Point-Thomasville HiToms News Release
THOMASVILLE, N.C. - Jacob Rogers homered to give the HiToms a lead they would not relinquish as Thomasville survived a ninth inning rally from the Martinsville Mustangs to earn a 2-1 win in front of 905 fans at Finch Field on Thursday night.
Thomasville (7-7) came to bat against Dustin Javins (L, 0-2) in the sixth inning having yet to crack the scoreboard. After a leadoff single from Brock Hebert, Rogers delivered a two-run shot over the wall in right center to put the HiToms up 2-0.
Brian Holmes (W, 1-1) departed the game after working seven scoreless innings and issuing only one hit with six strikeouts, but once the Wake Forest lefty was taken out, the bullpen coughed up a run.
Martinsville (6-8) scored their only run of the game, an unearned run in the eighth. With two outs and a runner on, AJ Nuziatio gap a double to left field to pull the Mustangs to within a run.
In the ninth, Martinsville brought the tying run to third and the go ahead run to second with two outs against Travis Tingle (S, 3) with one out. With one down, Eli Hynes struck out swinging ahead of pinch hitter, Shaun Ball who lined a fly ball to right field; with the ball dying, Rogers laid out and made the grab to give the HiToms a 2-1 victory.
The Tommies are back in action tomorrow night when they travel to Asheboro for a 7:05 first pitch. They return to Finch Field on Saturday afternoon at 6:00 when they host the Martinsville Mustangs for a double-header.
