Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PawSox pitchers walked 12 Lehigh Valley batters and threw 197 pitches, finally succumbing on an unearned run in extra innings in a messy affair at McCoy Friday night.
The PawSox offense started quickly, scoring two runs in the second when Aaron Bates reached on an error and Lars Anderson got aboard with a double-the pair came home on a fielder's choice and a groundout. They got three more in the third on singles by Josh Reddick and Niuman Romero, a two-RBI double from Bubba Bell, and an RBI single from Bates.
Romero drove in the sixth PawSox run in the fourth with an RBI single to drive in Kevin Cash, but the IronPigs had already begun to chip away. PawSox starter Rich Hill struck out all three men swinging in the first, but then began to slowly lose command. He walked two in the second and one in the third and escaped each time, but let in four runs in the fourth on three walks, a two-run double from Brian Bocock, and a two-run single from Rich Thompson.
Hill came out after a leadoff single in the fifth from Melvin Dorta, and reliever Chad Paronto allowed Dorta to score after a walk and an RBI double from Cody Ransom. The IronPigs finally tied the game at six in the seventh when Ransom, aboard on a fielder's choice, came home on three consecutive walks from Tommy Hottovy. Dustin Richardson averted further damage by striking out Thompson with the bases loaded to end the inning.
The PawSox bats went quiet after the fourth as IronPigs pitchers set down 12 in a row at one point and allowed just one hit and two walks the rest of the way. Richardson set down seven in a row himself, though, and got the game to extra innings still knotted at six.
In the tenth, Dane Sardinha singled to lead things off against Fernando Cabrera (2-5) and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He raced to third on a wild pitch, and when catcher Gustavo Molina threw wildly to third, Sardinha came home with the go-ahead run.
Bubba Bell singled to lead off the bottom of the tenth, but he was stranded at second as Oscar Villareal (3-3) held on to pick up the win for Lehigh Valley.
The PawSox head out now for a 10-game road trip to Buffalo and Rochester. They start with a doubleheader Saturday night in Buffalo, as Fabio Castro (5-8, 4.87) takes on Fernando Nieve (2-0, 4.19) at 5:35. The pitching matchup for the second game is TBA.
