Louisville, KY - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Louisville Bats 8-1 on Friday night in front of a crowd of 8,915. Jordan Zimmermann pitched five one-hit innings and struck out five while lowering his ERA to 0.53 over four starts with the Chiefs. Brian Bixler, Carlos Maldonado, and Michael Martinez each knocked in two runs and Syracuse finished the eight-game road trip with three wins and five losses.
Syracuse (65-62) opened the scoring with an RBI triple from Pete Orr to plate Jason Botts in the second. Orr was knocked in just two batters later on an RBI single from Carlos Maldonado to make it 2-0 in favor of Syracuse.
The Chiefs tacked on three more runs off of Bats starter Aaron Harang (0-2) in the fifth inning. Michael Martinez scored Boomer Whiting with a double and Brian Bixler followed immediately after with a two-run home run. It was his first home run as a Chief and his fourth of the year between Columbus, Indianapolis, and Syracuse.
The deficit for Louisville (71-55) continued to grow when Maldonado scored Orr on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. In the seventh, two more runs scored on a Jason Botts single to make it 8-0.
The lone Bats run came on a Corky Miller groundout in the eighth.
Zimmermann (1-0) retired thirteen straight batters to end his outing. He only walked one batter and it happened in the first inning. Collin Balester followed with three innings of relief and Adam Carr pitched a perfect ninth inning.
The Chiefs now trail Louisville by 6.5 games in the Wild Card entering action on Saturday. Syracuse will open a two game home series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Erik Arnesen (5-7, 4.03) is scheduled to start for the Chiefs against the Yankees Kei Igawa (2-3, 4.87). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
