Bulls Win, Braves Lose as Durham Wins Fourth Straight Division Title, 3-1 at Norfolk

Norfolk, VA- J.J. Furmaniak scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning, giving Durham the lead for good, as the Bulls won a fourth straight South Division Championship with a 3-1 win at Norfolk.
Furmaniak walked with one out against Zach Britton (2-3) and advanced to second on a walk to Angel Chavez. Jim Hoey came in and struck out Fernando Perez but Furmaniak stole third. With two out, Chavez took off for second on a 1-2 pitch, and Hoey threw it to the screen, allowing Furmaniak to give Durham a 2-1 lead.
Rocco Baldelli, who gave Durham a 1-0 advantage in the first with a run-scoring double, homered off Dennis Sarfate to start the ninth for some insurance. It was his first homer in four games since rejoining Durham.
Joe Bateman got the final five outs for his third save. Matt Angle lined to left into a double play, as Justin Ruggiano fired to Chris Richard at first to get Paco Figueroa. Jake McGee (1-0) worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief after Ramon Ortiz started to earn the victory.
Charlotte had edged Gwinnett 4-3 just minutes before Durham's win to give the Bulls a fourth straight division title. It's the first time in Durham's Triple-A history that the team has won so many consecutive division championships.
The Bulls at 79-47 have the best record in Triple-A and have won five in a row. Durham still has 17 games left in the regular season. The Bulls continue play on Saturday at Norfolk with Brian Baker on the mound. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 7 p.m., with first pitch at 7:15.
