Wildcats Powerplay Overpower Islanders in Moncton
February 1, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
Jeremy McKenna knows how to score on the powerplay.
The Summerside native and Moncton Wildcats forward was the bane of the Charlottetown Islanders penalty kill on Saturday afternoon, scoring a hat trick on the man advantage and adding an assist as the Islanders dropped another one to the Wildcats, this time by a score of 5-1.
The game started out fairly even, but Moncton would draw first blood near the end of the first period. On the powerplay, McKenna would try to slide a puck cross-crease to a waiting opponent; however, Chris McQuaid's skate would get in the way. The puck would bounce off McQuaid and in to the net, giving McKenna his 24th goal of the season.
As the second period opened up the Wildcats went back to work offensively. Mika Cyr would extend the lead on an odd-man rush, receiving a pass from Benoit-Olivier Groulx and moving to his backhand before going upstairs on Matthew Welsh for his 26th goal on the year.
Charlottetown would find themselves in penalty trouble not long after and Jeremy McKenna would take advantage again. The Wildcats powerplay would enter the Islanders zone with momentum and move the puck well before Alexander Khovanov would find McKenna waiting in the slot for the one-timer. He'd make no mistake for his 25th goal on the year.
The Wildcats would push hard throughout the second period but Welsh would hold the fort to the best of his ability. The veteran netminder looked like his normal calm, composed self to try his best to keep his team in the game.
Gaetan Jobin would get the Isles a little closer in the third period, finishing off a fantastic tic-tac-toe sequence between he and linemates Nikita Alexandrov and Cedric Desruisseaux. The goal would give Jobin his tenth on the year and second in as many games.
Unfortunately, that's as close as Charlottetown would get. McKenna would complete the hat trick on the powerplay and Jakob Pelletier would add another to send the Isles home with a stinging defeat.
Welsh put forth a valiant effort, making 40 saves in the defeat. Alexandrov's assist was his ninth point in his last ten games since returning from the World Junior Championships.
The Islanders will play a rare Tuesday game on February 4th in Halifax against the Mooseheads before they return home Friday to take on the Victoriaville Tigres at 7:30pm. Tickets are available as always at the Eastlink Centre box office, by phone at 902-629-6625, or online.
