Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Eagles have rewritten their history books following a 7-2 victory Saturday over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. It's the 12th straight victory on home ice for the team, a new club record. It's also the seventh straight win in total, wrapping up a perfect 5-0 homestand and giving the club a QMJHL best 14-1 record in the second half of the season.

The Eagles carried the opening minutes of the game, but it was Bathurst that would strike first. Defenseman Yan Aucoin put a low shot through a screen and by Kevin Mandolese to give the visitors the early edge. The Titan would miss a big opportunity to expand the lead after Kyle Havlena took a double minor for high sticking. After the penalty was killed, Shawn Boudrias tied the game at 1.

Cape Breton asserted control of the contest before the end of the first frame. It began with Egor Sokolov ripping a shot by Félix-Anthony Ethier to make it 2-1. Before period's end, Shawn Element tucked home a rebound of a Tyler Hinam shot and the Eagles were up 3-1 at the break.

After killing off a four minute high sticking penalty in the first, the Eagles would take advantage of one in the second (to Rémy Anglehart). The Eagles would score exactly 45 seconds into each half of the double minor: first it was Mathias Laferrière on a one timer making it 4-1, and then Xavier Bouchard put a shot through traffic to push the edge to 5-1.

Bathurst was hoping to start a third period rally akin to Friday night, and it potentially got started when Anglehart buried a one timer to cut the gap to 5-2. This time though the Eagles would lock things down, with goals 22 seconds apart- first Liam Kidney, and then Félix Lafrance became the seventh goal scorer on the night as the Eagles wrapped up a perfect home stand.

Mandolese stopped 23 of 25 shots in the win, while Ethier allowed seven goals on 37 shots in the loss.

The Eagles will now head to the province of Québec for their longest road trip of the season, six games in nine days. The opening game of the trip takes place Friday when the Eagles visit the Québec Remparts. You can hear all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 7:30 PM Atlantic time on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
