NOTES FROM THE GAME
- Jayden Plouffe's goal at the 1:54 mark of overtime gave the Sherbrooke Phoenix a 4-3 overtime victory over the Eagles in a back-and-forth game Monday afternoon in Sherbrooke.
- Reece Peitzsche scored in the final five minutes of the third period for the Eagles to tie the game. Elias Schneider scored and added an assist for the Eagles, with Maxim Schäfer also adding a goal for the Eagles 29 seconds after Schneider's in the second period.
- Kyan Labbé stopped 27 of 30 shots in the win for the Phoenix, while Lucas Beckman stopped 31 of 35 in the loss for the Eagles.
- Referee Dominic Cadieux was hit by a puck at the 10:52 mark of the first period and temporarily left the game, with Cedric Pauzé acting as the lone referee until Cadieux returned.
Both teams had an opportunity on the power play in the opening period, but it was a shorthanded tally that got the scoring started. Beckman was caught in front of his net, and the Phoenix capitalized, with Florent Houle hitting the open net. It was the only goal of the opening frame.
The Schneider and Schäfer goals were the only goals in the second period, both coming after the halfway mark. Schneider scored after zipping up the left side of the ice and putting it through Labbé's legs, before Schäfer scored a similar goal from the opposite side of the ice.
The third period was a seesaw affair that saw both teams battle back. With Schneider in the box for holding and Thomas Rousseau in the box for embellishment, the Phoenix took advantage of the open ice as Chad Bellemare ripped a shot just under the crossbar. Then, with less than five minutes to go, Louis-Alex Tremblay jumped into the play in the right faceoff circle, received a pass from Olivier Lampron, and pushed the go-ahead goal past Beckman.
The lead only lasted 50 seconds. With six attackers out- not for a traditional early goalie pull, but because of a delayed penalty- the Eagles found the tying goal as Peitzsche tapped it in from the front of the net. There would be no further scoring, and the teams headed for overtime.
The first shot of overtime proved to be the winner. Plouffe cut up the right wing and zapped it past Beckman at 1:54 to give Sherbrooke the win.
The Eagles will continue their stretch of road games as they visit the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is at 4 p.m. AST. The game is available for purchase at https://shorturl.at/iPASC, and you can also hear all the action on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com.
