Wildcats come up short against the Steeldogs, 23-20

ALBANY, GA- The South Georgia Wildcats (3-11) could not capitalize on a late fourth quarter turnover by the Birmingham Steeldogs (2-12) as Wildcats quarterback Brian Zbydniewski was picked off on the first play of the series with 40 seconds remaining in the game. The Steeldogs ran out the clock and walked away with a 23-20 victory in front of 6,283 fans at the Albany Civic Center.

Zbydniewski began the game with a 32 yard touchdown strike to WR/DB Montrail Pittman but the Wildcats did not score again until the fourth quarter. The Steeldogs scored 23 unanswered points to go up 23-7 going into the fourth quarter. Zbydniewski found lineman Voncellies Allen on a one yard touchdown pass and then OS Antwone Savage for a 33 yard touchdown score to cut Birmingham's lead to three points. Allen recovered a Steeldogs fumble with 48 seconds remaining but Zbydniewski's pass was intercepted by George Williams in the endzone. Zbydniewski finished the night 28-of-50 for 269 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions. Savage led all receivers with eight catches for 133 yards and one touchdown. Pittman earned U.S. Army Ironman of the Game catching four passes for 47 yards and one touchdown along with recording three tackles, one interception and one pass break-up.

Defensively the Wildcats were led by WR/LB Chris McKinney who had six tackles. DS Drakus Langford had three tackles, two tackles for a loss and one interception and lineman Eric Davis recorded two tackles, one interception and one sack.

Steeldogs quarterback Thomas Ricks completed 10 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions. OS Detronn Harris caught four passes for 72 yards and one touchdown and WR/DBTerrance Harris chipped in with two receptions for 55 yards and one score and seven tackles.

The Wildcats will travel up Interstate 75 to face in-state rival the Macon Knights on Saturday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. The ‘Cats will return to the Albany Civic Center for their final game of the regular season on Saturday, July 30 and will play host to the Green Bay Blizzard.
