Alabama Steeldogs News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - This weekend, the longest-tenured professional football team in Birmingham's history will compete in its 100th game.

On Saturday, July 23, the Birmingham Steeldogs will host the Arkansas Twisters at 7 p.m. at the BJCC Arena for the team's centennial match-up. Birmingham becomes the third team in arenafootball2 history to compete in 100 games. The Tulsa Talons and Quad City Steamwheelers achieved that mark in June of this year.

The Steeldogs are coming off of a thrilling 23-20 victory over the South Georgia Wildcats in Albany, Ga. this past weekend, giving Head Coach Bobby Humphrey his 51st career victory. Humphrey has coached the team in all 99 games thus far.

Birmingham's first game took place on March 31, 2000, in front of 14,831 fans and a national television audience at the BJCC Arena. The Steeldogs dropped a 59-18 decision to the now-defunct Tennessee Valley Vipers. Birmingham's first win came the following week over the Greensboro Prowlers, also a league casualty, on April 7, 2000 by a score of 18-7. The game remains the lowest-scoring completed game in af2 history.

In the past six seasons, the Steeldogs have played 30 teams, 16 of which are now defunct. Of the 51 wins, the most came against the Columbus Wardogs (5). Birmingham owns spotless records over nine teams, while going winless against six. The Steeldogs have had three ownership groups, with the current pair of Buddy King and Scott Myers having been in place for four seasons and counting.

Birmingham has made the playoffs in three of its six seasons, having competed in five postseason games, winning two. The team has scored 4,787 points and collected 23,742 total yards in 99 games, successfully proving that Arena Football is ultimately an offensive affair. In all, 305,778 fans have poured through the BJCC turnstiles to see the Steeldogs in action through 47 home games, an average of 6,606 fans per contest.
