Blizzard, Conquest Post Highest-Scoring Game In History

Green Bay Blizzard News Release

The Green Bay Blizzard has spent the entire 2005 season setting numerous team records, and on Friday night in Albany, New York, they went one step further and teamed up with the Conquest to set the all-time record for points scored in a single game. The final score was 88-82, and the point total of 170 would set a new mark - not just in arenafootball2 or the Arena Football League, but in all of professional football.

The game against the Conquest turned out to be the first-ever overtime game in the history of the Blizzard franchise, and though in the end the Blizzard would not come out on top, the game was indicative of the fast-paced, action-packed nature of Arena Football.

The Blizzard and Conquest have been no strangers to high-scoring games, as both teams have historically fielded high-octane offenses. The Blizzard had previously posted single-game high scores of 71, 69, 68, 65 and 61 points, and the Conquest had scored 69, 69, 68, 66 and 63 points in their highest-scoring games.

In addition to scoring a franchise best-ever 88 points, the Conquest scored the most points in an af2 game where the final score was decided by 7 points or fewer. The Blizzard, who also set a franchise record for points scored with 82, set a new af2 mark for points scored by a team in a loss.

The previous af2 mark was set on May, 28, 2004 in Honolulu, Hawaii, when the San Diego Riptide defeated the Hawaiian Islanders 91-77 to total 168 points. That was one point higher than the highest scoring game in AFL history, which was played on July 7, 2001 in New York City. The New York Dragons bested the Carolina Cobras 99-68 in that game, an aggregate score of 167 points.

The highest scoring game in NFL history was played nearly 40 years ago, on November 27, 1966 in Washington D.C., when the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants posted a total of 113 points as the Redskins won big, 72-41.

With the loss, the Blizzard falls to the #4 seed in the American Conference standings behind the Florida Firecats, Manchester Wolves and Louisville Fire, but is still in line to host a playoff game. (The 3rd and 4th ranked teams will host 5th and 6th ranked teams in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.)

The Blizzard looks to get back to their winning ways this Saturday night at the Resch Center in Green Bay, as the #1-ranked Florida Firecats come to town on "Fan Appreciation Night," and fans can enjoy $1.00 hot dogs, soda and beer all night long. It is also "ADT Night," and the first 1,500 fans will receive a pair of "Cheer Stix," courtesy of ADT Security.
