Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo and Sioux Falls combined to score eight goals in the last 20 minutes at Denny Sanford Premier Center Sunday, as the visiting Hawks topped the Stampede 6-4.
The final frame more than made up for an uneventful opening period, in which Waterloo was limited to seven shots on goal. The Stampede had 11 attempts forcing saves from Calvin Vachon. Sioux Falls ultimately outshot Waterloo in every period, and Vachon finished with 34 stops.
The Black Hawks jumped ahead during the latter part of the second period, thanks to a pair of goals each scored just seconds after a power play ended. At 12:45, Gavin Lindberg was waiting near the bottom of the left circle and pounced on the rebound of Tyler Miller's chance.
Another power play had just run out at 15:55 with Gavyn Thoreson on the right boards. He put a low shot toward the net and surprised goalie Caleb Heil with the attempt. It was the first of four points Thoreson would produce during the game.
Waterloo special teams came through just before intermission, killing off 1:22 spent two-men shorthanded. Then Grady Deering extended the lead as large as it would be at 3:04 of the third. Deering came out of the left corner attempting a pass to the top of the crease; the puck boomeranged right back, and Deering lifted it over Heil's pad.
A minute later, the Stampede were back within two as Artur Cholach blasted in a low shot from the left point.
The teams exchanged goals in quick succession just before the midpoint of the period. Thoreson set up Miller between the circles for Waterloo's lone power play goal of the night at 9:34. Just 11 seconds later, Gennadi Chaly flew up right wing, through the circle, and across the top of the crease to lift in a backhander.
A Stampede power play conversion at 12:08 made it a one-goal game. After Sioux Falls won the initial draw during the power play, Beckett Hendrickson centered out of the left corner for J.J. Wiebusch to score on a one-touch shot.
Less than two minutes later, Michael Phelan notched the eventual game-winner. Jumping into the rush, he fed a pass to Thoreson, who then gave it right back, and Phelan finished from pointblank range.
Sioux Falls lifted Heil early, and the Stampede were rewarded at 16:43 when Hendrickson buried a rebound from the left circle.
However, they could not manage an equalizer and after two close-call Hawks attempts at the empty net, Lindberg batted a puck deep into the Stampede zone. He then chased it down behind the net to set up Thoreson in front of the open frame.
The Hawks won two-of-three during their busiest weekend so far this season. Sunday's result moved the team back to .500 at 8-8-0.
Now the Hawks look ahead to Thursday's traditional Thanksgiving game, presented by Lincoln Savings. The matchup will be this season's first meeting with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Bank. It will include Waterloo's annual Teddy Bear Toss; fans are encouraged to bring new stuffed toys to throw on the ice after the Hawks' first goal. The teddy bears will be donated to Toys for Tots and other children's charities. Tickets for the game are still available from the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office or online at tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
