SAUGET, IL - The Washington Wild Things squared off against the Gateway Grizzlies in their first game of the 2016 season at GCS Ballpark. Washington won with a 4-3 lead against the Grizzlies.

The game went to the fifth inning with no runs until Grizzly pitcher Trevor Richards allowed 3 runs along with several walks before being replaced with Adam Eggnatz. David Popkins hit a double and then scored the first run of the night after Kyle Pollock advanced him to home base on a single.

The Grizzlies gained momentum at the bottom of the ninth scoring two extra runs with bases loaded but were quickly shutdown with a double play and then with an ending strikeout by debuting pitcher Andrew Woeck.

The second game of the three game series between the Wild Things and Grizzlies will be Saturday at 8:05 EDT; listen live at www.washingtonwildthings.com. Washington returns to CONSOL Energy Park next Friday for their 15th home opener when they host the Lake Erie Crushers. Tickets are available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office.
