Rascals Unable to Overcome Three-Run Sixth

River City Rascals News Release
A dominant pitching performance from the Lake Erie Crushers and a three-run sixth inning paved way for a 3-0 shutout over the River City Rascals Friday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.
Rascal 's (0-2) third year starter Tim Koons was in a pitcher 's duel with Crushers (2-0) starter Fernando Gallegos through the first five, allowing no runs on four hits in his 2016 season debut. However, after a ground out to open up the bottom of the sixth, the Crushers offense broke out leading them to their second win of the season.
Jose Barraza grounded one slowly down the first base line and got into scoring position on a throwing error by Koons. Juan Avila followed that with a RBI single and Daniel Aldrich with a RBI triple giving the Crushers a 2-0 lead and chasing Koons (0-1) out of the game. Manager Steve Brook called upon last year 's team leader in ERA, Will Schierholz to try and limit the damage, but a walk and a RBI single from Brady North extended the lead to three runs. Michael Gunn recorded the final out in the inning and Jared Wilson was sharp in his Rascals debut, helping Gunn get out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh and keeping the Crushers off the board the final two frames.
Koons took the loss, losing his first regular season game since August 11th, 2014. He allowed three runs (2 earned) on six hits and two walks.
Fernando Gallegos, who made his first professional start out of California State Dominguez Hills, allowed just one hit through four innings with one strikeout. Manager Steve Mongiardo went to his bullpen after that and they were great for the second night in a row, holding the Rascals to just three hits the rest of the way.
"They worked very quickly and it helped them be successful. We got to do a better job of stepping out and disrupting that pace, " outfielder Kyle Gaedele said. "It 's the second game of the season, nobody is panicking and we will be ready to go tomorrow. "
Offensively, the Rascals did not have a runner in scoring position until the 7th inning and were robbed of a couple hits early on, a diving grab by right fielder Aldrich and a diving grab by center fielder Connor Oliver. Johnny Morales singled with one out in the ninth, putting the tying run on deck but a fly ball in the right field corner and a ground out ended the game.
Along with Morales, Dominique Taylor, Josh Ludy and Josh Silver recorded one hit each for River City.
The Rascals close out the season opening series against Lake Erie tomorrow night with Zeb Sneed on the mound. First pitch scheduled for 7:05 and can be heard on rascals.caster.fm.
