Beach Bums drop season opener in S. Ilinois

Traverse City Beach Bums News Release


The Traverse City Beach Bums(0-1) fought back from a 4-0 deficit but ultimately fell to the Southern Illinois Miners(1-0) by a final score of 7-5. After a scoreless first two innings, Southern Illinois got the offense started in the 3rd when, with 1 out, Craig Massey and Julius Gaines hit back to back singles. Nolan Earley walked to load the bases and then Alex DeLeon drove in Massey with a sacrifice fly to get the Miners on the board. In the 5th, Gaines hit a one out triple to center then came in to score on an Earley RBI single, making it 2-0. Southern Illinois scored two more runs in the 6th to take a 4-0 lead, thanks Jordan Brower scoring on a fielding error followed by an RBI single by Toby DeMello to drive in Francisco Rosario. The Beach Bums finally got into the Miners bullpen and were able to claw back into the game in the 7th. The frame started with three consecutive walks to Wes Wallace, Steven Patterson, and Ryan Bottger, to load the bases with nobody out. After another pitching change, the bats got rolling when Matt Burns ripped a double down the left field line to score Wallace and Patterson, cutting the deficit in half at 4-2. Jeff DeBlieux followed with a sacrifice fly down the left field line as Bottger ran home on the play. Will Kengor tied the game up on an hard single up the middle through the drawn-in infield, plating Burns, and tying the game. Jose Vargas followed with a slow roller but the shortstop threw away the potential double play ball to extend the inning. Brandon Thomasson took advantage hitting a deep sacrifice fly to left, giving the Beach Bums a 5-4 lead. The Traverse City advantage didn't last long as Steve Marino doubled to start the bottom of the 8th. Two batters later, Rosario singled up the middle, driving in Marino to tie the game at 5. DeMello then came up a rocked a pitch over the left field fence, bringing the game to 7-5 Miners on his 1st homer of the season. The Beach Bums got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but could not come back for a second time.

Rick Teasley earned the win for Southern Illinois, going 6 scoreless innings, giving up just 2 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 4. Joeanthony Rivera suffers to loss giving up two runs in the eighth inning. Kramer Champlin got the start and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 9 hits, 2 earned runs, walking 1 and striking out 3. Benjamin Libuda was solid out of the pen, spelling Champlin and going 1 2/3 and only allowing two base runners via the walk. Southern Illinois' Zach Cooper went scoreless in the ninth for the save, allowing a walk.

Game 2 of the three game series in Southern Illinois continues tomorrow night with Dylan Stoops taking the hill for the Beach Bums against Jarett Miller. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pmEDT with the Miller Lite Pregame Show beginning at 6:45pm. Tom Willms will have the call on 101.9 The Bay.
