Wild Things Fall to Boomers in Series Opener

SCHAUMBURG, Il. (June 22) - The Washington Wild Things could not hold off the Schaumburg Boomers in the series opener at Boomers Stadium, falling by the final score of 6-5 Friday. Washington, who is still in first place in the East, has now lost three straight for the first time in 2018.

The Boomers opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run single from designated hitter Dylan Jones.

The Wild Things responded in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a single from catcher Chase Simmons. Simmons plated third baseman Mike Hill and first baseman Louis Mele after the two moved into scoring position on an error by Schaumburg's shortstop.

Washington pulled ahead with a RBI single from short stop Brett Marr in the top of the sixth. In the next at-bat, a two-run single from right fielder Hector Roa scored left fielder Roman Collins and designated hitter Kyle Pollock to make the score 5-2 in favor of the Wild Things.

Schaumburg added their first run since the second inning with a home run to right field off the bat of first baseman Collin Ferguson with one out in the seventh, which ended a string of 15 straight Boomers retired for Trevor Bradley, who took a no decision in the loss. Short stop Josh Gardiner's single drove in right fielder Zack Weigel before a base hit from second baseman Jack Parenty loaded the bases. With the bases full, Washington's relief pitcher Davis Adkins walked third baseman Kenny Towns to tie the score at 5-5.

In the bottom of the eighth, a single from Weigel gave the Boomers the lead, and with the Wild Things unable to score in their last at-bat, Schaumburg took the game, 6-5.

The win went to Schaumburg's Darrell Thompson. Jake Joyce got his seventh save this season for the Boomers with a scoreless ninth. Washington's Davis Adkins took the loss in relief.

Washington and Schaumburg face off again tomorrow night at Boomers Stadium for the second game of the series. First pitch is set for 7:00 pm. Eastern.
