Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Evansville, IN - The Southern Illinois Miners' bats fell silent on Friday night against the Evansville Otters, as they managed only two hits in being shut out 6-0 at Bosse Field.
The Otters got on the board in the second inning, scoring an unearned run against Miners starter Geno Encina to take the lead at 1-0. They would add three more runs in the bottom of the third, including two on a two-out double by Joe Lytle, to vault ahead 4-0. Evansville's offense would also plate single runs in the fifth and eighth innings to pad their lead for the final 6-0 score, with both runs also scoring with two outs on hits by Toby Thomas and Mike Rizzitello.
The Miners were never able to get going against Otters starter Luc Rennie (4-0), who permitted a walk in the first to Romeo Cortina, a double to Kurt Wertz, Jr. leading off the second inning, and a one-out single by Joe Duncan in the sixth as the only baserunners reaching safely, striking out 12 batters in the course of eight shutout innings. The Miners as a team fanned 14 times against Evansville's pitching in the defeat, while the Otters' offense amassed 15 base hits against Miners pitching as they stumbled in the weekend series opener.
Southern Illinois will look to rebound on Saturday night against the Otters' Tyler Vail at 6:35 p.m. back at Bosse Field. The Miners' starter is yet to be announced.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's winningest franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
