Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - Despite the rain washing away the final doubleheader of the series between the Southern Illinois Miners on Thursday, it didn't stop Manager Billy Horn from making moves as the CornBelters announced Friday (June 21) the signing of former Texas Rangers farmhand, David Perez.
Perez joins Normal, after the release of pitchers George Faue and Chris Weiss yesterday, along with the activation of outfielder Nick Cain.
The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic brings seven years of affiliated ball experience with the Texas Rangers and one with the Los Angles Angels. Perez began his career with the Rangers when he was signed at the age of 17 in 2010, where he joined the DSL Rangers. In one season there, he owned a stunning 1.41 ERA in 14 starts along with 68 strikeouts and a 4-4 record. Perez also only walked eight batters in his 70 innings of work.
Net year (2011), the right-hander was promoted to the Spokane Indians, Low A ball where he was teammates with current Belter Kevin Matthews. Perez spent three seasons there and posted a 3-5 record in 12 starts along with appearing 18 other times for a total of 67 innings.
In 2015, Perez started the season off with the Single-A affiliate, Hickory Crawdads. He had 0.93 ERA in 16 games while going 2-1 and was promoted to A-Advanced (High Desert Mavericks) two months later. Perez went 4-3 with one save in 16 games and only walked 14 compared to 60 strikeouts.
He again continued to climb the Rangers system when he was promoted to Double-A Frisco after just four games when he went 2-0 in 12 innings and picked up his second career save. The 6-foot-5-inch Perez pitched in 25 games along with three starts and fanned 51 batters for the RoughRiders.
Once Perez was released from the Rangers, he signed with the Los Angles Angels and pitched in 10 games for their Rookie Ball Affiliate last year. This season he has spent time with both the Road Warriors and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League (Independent).
David Perez will join the club for the three-game series against the Gateway Grizzlies with the first pitch of the series set for tonight at 7:05 p.m.
