Westphal Deals as Crushers Win Opener

CRESTWOOD, ILLINOIS. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, opened up their nine game road trip with a 7-0 shutout of the Windy City ThunderBolts on Friday night.

Crushers starter Ethan Westphal (1-2) went seven scoreless innings for Lake Erie. That included the right-hander carrying a perfect game into the seventh inning before allowing a leadoff double.

Lake Erie (22-15) supplied offense consistently throughout the night. Kewby Meyer opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double, scoring Kevin Lachance. Cody Lenahan then made it 2-0 with a single that scored Meyer.

The night for Lenahan was also just beginning. In the third inning with a man on, the third baseman homered for the first time in 2018. A two-run home run made it 4-0 Crushers. Lenahan finished with three RBIs and he raised his batting average to .319 on the season.

ThunderBolts starter Eddie Avila (0-2) went 5.2 innings while allowing four runs on four hits.

The Crushers added a run in the seventh after a bases loaded walk to Sean Hurley scored Lachance, made it 5-0. Lake Erie tacked on two runs in the eighth against reliever Austin Sweet. An RBI bunt single by Lachance and an RBI single by Meyer expanded the lead to 7-0.

In the top of the seventh, Omar Obregon doubled down the left field line for the first off of Westphal. Windy City loaded the bases against Westphal but he ended his night with two strikeouts. He struck out seven and only allowed two hits in his longest outing of the season.

Luke Watts and Mason Klotz tossed two scoreless innings for the Crushers out of the bullpen. Windy City (11-25) managed only three hits in the game.

Lake Erie improved to a league-best 13-6 on the road with the win. The Crushers send Sean Renzi (5-1) to the bump tomorrow while the ThunderBolts go with Devin Raftery (0-1). Game time is set for 7:05 CDT.
