Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things (13-18) took an 8-4 loss in their series opener against the Empire State Greys (8-22) on Friday night.
Wild Things starting pitcher, Robert Gonzalez went four innings allowing seven runs, nine hits and three walks while striking out three. The Wild Things would go to their bullpen to start the fifth and bring in regular starter Kobe Foster. This was Foster's first game action since being activated from the seven-day injured list earlier this month. Foster looked sharp as he struck out four across two innings while only allowing one run and one hit.
The Wild Things wouldn't let the night end in a shutout. In the sixth inning, Melvin Novoa ripped an RBI-double down the left field line to score Nick Gotta who led off the inning with a walk. Then Abraham Sequera scored on a balk and Novoa scored on a Wagner Lagrange sacrifice fly to center field. Washington found a way to add another after Scotty Dubrule drew a leadoff walk and scored on an error by Empire State. The Wild Things still trailed by four entering the top of the eighth.
Through the late innings, the Wild Things pitching found its groove. Relievers Christian James, Ray Pacella and newcomer Jack Cone combined for five strikeouts and only allowed two hits in three scoreless frames combined.
Tomorrow the Washington Wild Things will look to get back in the win column. Saturday's first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Tomorrow is Jimmy Buffett Night presented by Tucker Arensberg with a Wild Things' straw hat giveaway to the first 1,000 fans in attendance.
