Frisco RoughRiders News Release
Joe Wieland recorded the fourth no-hitter in RoughRiders history in Frisco's 3-0 victory over San Antonio Friday night from Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium.
This is the first time that a Frisco pitcher has crafted a no-hitter by himself in a nine-inning game. It is the fourth no-hitter in RoughRiders history and the second this season. Martin Perez posted a rain-shortened perfect game April 19 at Arkansas.
Wieland faced the minimum and only allowed one base runner to reach. The right-hander walked Andy Parrino in the fourth inning, but he was later erased while trying to steal second base. Wieland threw a season-high 109 pitches and struck out seven. The Missions' best chance for a hit came when Jedd Gyorko flew out to the wall in left field to lead off the eighth inning.
San Antonio (69-35, 20-14) entered Friday in a tie with the San Jose Giants for the best overall record in full-season minor league baseball. Now, the 'Riders (59-45, 19-15) trail the Missions by only one game in the second half standings within the Texas League South.
The RoughRiders scored in three different innings. Tommy Mendonca posted sacrifice flies in both the first and the fifth, which pushed his team-leading RBI total to 76. In the third inning, Mike Bianucci clubbed his 25th home run, which is good for second in the Texas League.
The 'Riders and Missions continue this four-game series Saturday night at 7:05. Richard Bleier (3-5, 6.13 ERA) will start for Frisco against fellow left-hander Rob Musgrave (6-2, 3.21 ERA). Pre-game coverage along the RoughRiders Baseball Network begins at 6:35.
