CORPUS CHRISTI - And then there were five.
Ryan-Sanders Entertainment and L&F Distributors announced Friday the addition of the Casey Donahew Band to Whataburger Field's October 22 Ziegfest Texas Music Festival.
Donahew joins Reckless Kelly, Jack Ingram, Robert Earl Keen and opening act Phillip Thomas for the ballpark's second edition of Ziegfest.
"Casey has a great story," Ryan-Sanders Entertainment EVP JJ Gottsch said. "His style has been compared to Robert Earl's. Casey started out as a favorite on the Texas club circuit, but his hard work has paid off at the national level.
"His addition nicely rounds out our six-and-a-half hour Texas Country Music menu!"
The Casey Donahew band is comprised of Donahew (acoustic/electric/ vocals), J.J. Soto (lead guitar), TAZ (drums), Steve Stone (bass), Josh Moore (fiddle) and A.C. Copeland (keyboards). Donahew grew up in Burleson, south of Fort Worth, where he was active in rodeo and his father's greyhound racing business. Donahew started playing local clubs just nine years ago. His latest release, Moving On (2009), debuted at No. 28 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and sold over 14,000 in five months.
Other releases include Lost Days (2005), The Casey Donahew Band (2006) and Live-Raw-Real, In the 'Ville (2008).
Always popular with the college-age crowd (his corner-turning 2007 show at Billy Bob's Texas drew 3,500 without radio airplay), Donahew and mates perform over 200 shows a year. His everyman persona and remarkable ability to connect with fans make for entertaining and memorable performances.
"I think we're just believable," Donahew explained. "We're not trying to be somebody we're not. We're just normal guys, you can tell. And people see that and respond to it."
In the early days, their act was characterized as a "word-of-mouth, underground band." Today, they value their underground roots and fiercely retain their independence.
