New Jersey Jackals News Release

Newark, N.J. - A.J. Wideman allowed just one unearned run over 6 2/3 innings of work to notch his sixth straight win as the New Jersey Jackals downed the Newark Bears, 7-1, to sweep their in-state rivals in a three-game series at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Thursday night. With the victory, their seventh in their last eight games, the Jackals maintains a first-place lead in the second-half standings with 10 games remaining in the regular season.

Wideman (6-2), who won for the sixth time in his last six starts, allowed six singles in six separate innings. Steve Fox and Cody Railsback closed out the victory with 2 1/3 frames of scoreless relief.

After both teams were set down in order in the first inning, New Jersey opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second. After a one-out walk by D'Angelo Jimenez, Kris Sanchez lined his team-leading 13th home run into the left field bullpen to give the Jackals a 2-0 lead. Later in the frame, New Jersey strung together four consecutive two-out singles with Sean Smith knocking home Mike DeJesus to make it 3-0.

The Jackals extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning on a two-run double off the bat of Myron Leslie.

Newark finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth, plating an unearned run against A.J. Wideman to make it a 5-1 contest when Brandon Watson led off with a single, stole second, and scored on an error by second baseman D'Angelo Jimenez.

New Jersey tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning on a Bryan Sabatella and a Newark error to take a 7-1 lead and cap the scoring.

Bears' starter Casey Gaynor (5-3) was chased from the game without recording an out in the fifth inning after allowing five runs on 11 hits en route to taking the loss.

The Jackals return to Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday night to open up their final seven-game homestand of the season as they welcome the Brockton Rox and manager Bill Buckner to Little Falls for a four-game series. Due to the impending hurricane threatening the northeast this weekend, the Jackals and Rox will play a doubleheader on Friday with game one slated for a 4:35 p.m. first pitch. In game one, New Jersey will send Isaac Pavlik (12-3, 2.78 ERA) to the mound while Brockton counters with Dustin Birosak (7-1, 2.73 ERA). In the nightcap, Brockton will start Zach Woods (1-1, 1.59 ERA) while the Jackals have yet to name a starter. The teams will not play on Sunday. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
