New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, N.J. - The New Jersey Jackals continue to load up for a potential playoff push, re-signing veteran slugger Sandy Madera and acquiring fleet-footed outfielder Bryan Sabatella from the Shreveport-Bossier Captains of the American Association in exchange for cash and a player to be named later.

Sabatella made his Jackals' debut last night, going 1-for-5 with an RBI in New Jersey's 9-4 win at Newark. Madera is expected to be in the starting lineup tonight as the Jackals conclude their series against the Bears at Riverfront Stadium. Can-Am League playoff roster must be finalized by this Friday, August 26.

Madera, New Jersey's career leader in batting average (.359), returns to the Jackals for his third stint with the team. He began the 2011 season in the Mexican League, where he batted a combined .325 with 19 home runs for Yucatan and Monterrey.

In two previous seasons with the Jackals, the Dominican Republic native blasted 30 home runs in 132 games. In 2005, he hit .350 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs in 46 games. In 2007, Madera posted perhaps the best offensive season in team history when he hit .364 with 21 home runs and 75 RBIs in 86 games.

Originally signed by the Oakland A's as a free agent in 2000, the 31-year-old has spent time in five different affiliated organizations, including two seasons at the Triple-A level with the Boston Red Sox. Now in his 12th professional season, Madera boasts a .326 career average with 117 home runs.

Sabatella joins the Jackals after posting a .350 batting average with four home runs, 66 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in 86 games with the Captains in 2011. Sabatella, who ranked eighth in the American Association in batting at the time of the trade, compiled a 20-game hitting streak earlier this season.

Sabatella is in his fifth season of independent baseball after spending his first two seasons at the Single-A level in the Seattle Mariners' system. In 2010, he batted .334 and finished second in the American Association with 41 stolen bases. Sabatella Was an Atlantic League All-Star in 2009 with the Lancaster Barnstormers prior to being traded to Shreveport-Bossier that July. The Long Island native has hit over .300 in three of his first four independent seasons and stolen at least 32 bases during each of those campaigns.

Sabatella was a ninth-round draft pick of the Mariners in 2005 following his junior season at Quinnipiac University. In his final season with the Bobcats, Sabatella won the Northeast Conference triple crown and was named NEC Player of the Year after batting .406 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2011 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
