Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts were shutout for the first time in 2016 Saturday as they were blanked 8-0 by Tyler Herron and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Herron (4-1) was rolling right from the start for the RedHawks (15-13), as he retired the first 10 in a row before a Zack Cox double gave the Wingnuts (15-13) their first base runner of the night.

The right-hander had just two frames in which he allowed two to reach, and he allowed just four hits on the night, a season-low for Wichita. Herron went the full nine for the visitors, giving him his second complete game shutout of the campaign.

Fargo got their ace the lead in the second. An error by Wichita allowed the game's first run to score, and with two down Bryan Johns then singled to make it 2-0.

The RedHawks doubled their advantage in the third, as Josh Mazzola took Wingnuts starter Tim Brown (2-2) deep for a two-run shot.

The lead ballooned to seven in the fifth, when a controversial call went the way of Fargo. Ryan Pineda was ruled safe on a stolen base, but the Wingnuts and manager Pete Rose Jr. disagreed, and the Wichita skipper was ejected for arguing the call. The safe call kept the inning alive for K.D. Kang who singled in a run on the very next pitch. The next batter, Brian Humphries, launched a two-run homer to make it 7-0.

Fargo-Moorhead got one more run in the eighth, capping the evening's scoring by taking advantage of another Wingnuts error, one of three on the night for the home team.

After splitting the first two games of the set, the Wingnuts and RedHawks get together for a rubber match Sunday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Veteran lefty Charlie Leesman (1-2, 6.09) will get the start for Wichita, while Fargo-Moorhead will counter with fellow southpaw Will Mathis (0-0, 1.63). First pitch is set for 1:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
