Saints Hammer Five Home Runs, Win 21st of Season, 11-5 over Goldeyes

WINNIPEG, MB - The home runs came in waves on Saturday night at Shaw Park against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Tony Caldwell set a career high with two home runs and five RBI, Alonzo Harris tied a career high with two home runs and the Saints had nine extra base hits as they won their third straight game 11-5 improving to 21-9 on the season, best record in the American Association.

The home run barrage began with the second pitch of the game as Harris launched a solo shot to left, his first of the game and sixth of the year, to lead off the game and make it 1-0.

After the Goldeyes made it 2-1 in the bottom of the inning the onslaught continued in the second. Tony Thomas led off the second with a high chopper over the head of third baseman Wes Darvill for a base hit. Willie Argo followed with a walk. Caldwell was then asked to bunt, but after the first pitch the bunt was taken off. He crushed a three-run homer to left, his first of the day and third of the season, to make it 4-2. Chad Christensen followed with a solo homer to left, his first of the season, to make it 5-2. It was the 27th time in Saints history they've gone back-to-back and second time this season. The other time was when they hit three straight on June 2. Aaron Gretz then walked, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Nate Hanson's RBI single to make it 6-2.

In the third Caldwell and Harris came calling again. Argo led off with a triple and Caldwell drilled a two-run home run to left, his second of the game and career tying high fourth of the season, to make it 8-2. Caldwell finished 4-5 with a double, two home runs a career high five RBI and two runs scored. The four hits tied a career high, the only other time he accomplished the feat was on July 15, 2015 with the New Jersey Jackals. Three batters later Harris hit another solo homer, his second of the game and seventh of the season, to make it 9-2. Harris finished 2-6 with two home runs, two RBI and two runs scored.

Saints starter Mark Hamburger cruised after the first inning retiring 14 batters in a row at one point. In the sixth the streak ended on a Maikol Gonzalez single and that was followed by a single from Josh Romanski. David Rohm then clubbed a three-run homer, his second of the season and second in as many games, to make it 9-5. Hamburger would settle down after that and went 8.0 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits while striking out two to improve to 5-0.

The Saints tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Breland Almadova led off with a double and scored on Hanson's single. Hanson went 3-5 with two RBI.

In the ninth Argo singled and went to third on Caldwell's double. Argo scored on Christensen's sacrifice fly. Argo finished the night 3-4, a home run shy of the cycle, and three runs scored.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Kody Knaus (1-1, 4.41) against Goldeyes LHP (2-0, 3.45). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
