OMAHA - The winners of the Nebraska Education Savings Trust's (NEST) "Why I Want to Go to College" Writing Contest were recognized at Werner Park on Sunday, May 1 prior to the Storm Chasers' scheduled contest against the Oklahoma City Dodgers. The 12 winners were announced on Friday, April 29 by Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg.

Below is the list of winners:

1st Congressional District - Nebraska

- First: Amelia Knosp, Fremont Middle School in Fremont, Nebraska

- Second: Gloria Ovwigho, Lincoln Lutheran Junior High School in Palmyra, Nebraska

- Thrid: John Boesen, Malcolm Public Schools in Malcom Nebraska

2nd Congressional District - Nebraska

- First: Eddie Schweikert, Westside Middle School in Omaha, Nebraska

- Second: Ruth Isaacson, Gretna Middle School in Gretna, Nebraska

- Third: Jayleesha Cooper, Holy Name Catholic School in Omaha, Nebraska

3rd Congressional District - Nebraska

- First: Emmalee Harder, Randolph Public Schools in Belden, Nebraska

- Second: Weston Reineke, Loup County Public School in Taylor, Nebraska

- Third: Sheridan Wilson, Arthur County Schools in Lemoyne, Nebraska

Outside Nebraska

- First: Bree Cleveland, Family of Christ Christian School in Tampa, Florida

- Second: Adway Wadekar, Sarah W. Gibbson Midle School in Westborough, Massachusetts

- Third: Jacob Mohnacs, Harrington Middle School in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey

Each winner received contributions to Nebraska Educational Savings Trust college savings plans, ranging in value from $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. Three winners were chosen from each of Nebraska's U.S. congressional districts, in addition to three winners from outside of Nebraska.

In total, 1,133 entries from across the country were received this year. The first round of judging was performed by students and faculty from the College of Education at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, with final selections made by Treasurer Stenberg.
