Iowa Cubs News Release

Nashville, TN - Willson Contreras launched his first Triple-A home run, but it accounted for the Iowa Cubs' (9-13) only run of the night as they fell to the Nashville Sounds (12-12) 5-1, Monday at First Tennessee Park.

Iowa starter Pierce Johnson (0-2) came out strong, dishing out two strikeouts in the first frame, but struggled in the following innings. Nashville jumped on the righty in the second to take an early 3-0 lead that they would never relinquish. Johnson was chased after 3.0 innings and eventually took the loss, allowing four earned runs off four hits.

The Sounds grabbed another run in the third off a RBI single from Renato Nunez and extended their lead to 5-0 on Rangel Ravelo's base hit in the fourth. The Iowa bullpen did its job to shut down Nashville's bats in the remaining frames. Brandon Gomes allowed one hit in one scoreless inning, before Felix Pena took over and tossed 2.0 hitless frames. Giovanni Soto closed out the game with a flawless ninth.

Contreras help the I-Cubs avoid the shutout with a solo shot in the eighth, marking his first career Triple-A blast. Arismendy Alcantara recorded his fourth multi-hit game of the year with two base knocks.

Nashville starter Daniel Mengden (1-0) took the win and dazzled in his Triple-A debut as he held Iowa batters to five hits through 6.0 scoreless innings. Nunez helped the Sounds' effort as he fell a double shy of the cycle and tabbed two RBI.

Iowa and Nashville meet again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at First Tennessee Park. Catch the action on AM 940 or online at www.iowacubs.com.
