Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers (13-11) stung the Salt Lake Bees (15-10) for eight hits and six runs in a 6-1 series-opening victory in front of a sellout crowd on Monday night at Cheney Stadium.
Tacoma starting pitcher Adrian Sampson allowed just one run on six hits through 7.0 innings of work, the longest outing by a Rainiers starting pitcher this season. He issued no walks and struck out seven for his third win of the season.
Center fielder Boog Powell (2x4) and right fielder Shawn O'Malley (2x3) produced the Rainiers only multi-hit performances, and combined to score three of the club's six runs.
The Rainiers grabbed a lead just two batters into the bottom of the first inning. Powell led of the frame with a single to left field and shortstop Chris Taylor followed with a two-run home run to right field to give Tacoma a 2-0 advantage.
Tacoma worked across a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from first baseman Stefen Romero and a fielding error by Salt Lake shortstop Angel Rosa to push their lead out to 4-0.
O'Malley opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a line drive triple off the wall in left center and came around to score on batter later on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Tyler Smith, giving the Rainiers a 5-0 edge.
Bees left fielder Kyle Kubitza stroked a triple off the right-center field wall with one out in the top of the fifth and came around to score on an RBI single from Juan Graterol, cutting the Rainiers lead to 5-1.
Third baseman Ed Lucas polished off the Rainiers offensive effort with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, producing the 6-1 final margin. The solo shot was his second home run in as many games, after smacking a grand slam in Sunday's victory in Las Vegas.
Paul Fry and Blake Parker shut down the Bees over the final 2.0 frames, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Tacoma and Salt Lake continue their series tomorrow, Tuesday, May 3. Rainiers right-hander Donn Roach (1-2, 10.59) will start opposite Bees lefty Nate Smith (2-0, 3.94). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. PT.
