Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO, Texas - Johnny Whittleman's two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth lifted the Frisco RoughRiders to a 3-2 win over the Hooks Thursday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
The victory enabled Frisco to stay within two games of first-place Midland in the Texas League South with four left to play. Midland beat San Antonio Thursday 3-1.
Starting pitchers Douglas Arguello and Blake Beavan were settling into a fairly decent duel heading into the fourth. Each surrendered a run in the third.
Nick Moresi opened the frame with a line-drive home run that went over the box seat section above the left field wall. The RoughRiders drew even in their half of the third on Dustin Majewski's two-out RBI single to center.
Throughout the third inning, intense lightning bolts could be seen within a few miles of the ballpark. Play continued on into the fourth, when Mark Ori singled to left with one out. Beavan went 3-1 to the next batter, Jhon Florentino, when umpire crew chief Stephen Barga, from his post at first, waved everyone off the field.
The electrical storm was such that, about 10 minutes after the field was cleared, power went out at the ballpark, plunging all into darkness. A few moments later, it started to pour.
The rain eventually subsided and the power was restored. An hour and 26 minutes after play was suspended, the game resumed, with Beavan and Arguello both shelved due to the lengthy delay.
Collin DeLome gave the Hooks a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth with his 20th homer of the year, a solo shot that hit the top of the wall in right. He becomes the sixth player in club history to hit 20 or more home runs in a single season.
Reliever Charlie Weatherby (1-4), who kept the Riders off the board in the fourth and fifth, didn't fare as well in the sixth. He retired Majewski on a fly ball to center to start the frame, but walked Chad Tracy on five pitches. That brought Whittleman to the plate, and he clubbed Weatherby's first pitch into the fence just above the wall in right-center for his 10th homer of the year and a 3-2 Frisco lead.
The Hooks did not get a hit from the sixth inning on against relievers Beau Jones (3-4), Corey Young and Beau Vaughan, who earned his eighth save.
Corpus Christi plays its final road game of the season Friday night at 7:05. Kenny Baugh (4-3, 5.19) takes the hill for the Hooks, while Omar Poveda (10-5, 4.38) counters for Frisco.
