Jones Dooms Drillers
September 4, 2009 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
Daryl Jones' walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning dealt a serious blow to the Tulsa Drillers' playoff chances, as the Cards downed the Drillers by a score of 3-2 on Friday night at Hammons Field.
The win gives Springfield three wins in four games in the series against Tulsa, but more importantly, drops the Drillers to two games back of Northwest Arkansas with just three to play. Tulsa and Northwest Arkansas will meet for the final three regular season games at Drillers Stadium, this weekend. The winner of the North Division Second Half Title will meet Springfield in the opening round of the Texas League Playoffs, which begin on Wednesday at Hammons Field.
Tied at 2-2, Tulsa closer Andrew Johnston (2-4) hit Pete Kozma to open the inning. After a passed ball allowed Kozma to take second base, Johnston got Mike Folli to pop up for the first out of the inning. After a walk to Jim Rapoport put runners at first and second, Jones delivered a shot into the left-center field gap, plating Kozma with the game-winning run.
The Cards struck first on Friday, as Tulsa starter Chaz Roe fired a wild pitch to let a run in, then allowed an RBI double to Joe Mather, as Springfield took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Springfield starter Chuckie Fick, making a spot-start on Friday night, was impressive through five shut-out innings, allowing just four hits.
In the sixth, Gary Daley came out of the bullpen and allowed the Drillers to get even. Danny Sandoval's RBI single made it 2-1, before pinch-hitter Ryan Harvey's sac fly tied the game at 2-2.
The game remained tied until the ninth, as Justin Fiske and Casey Mulligan combined to work three scoreless innings, with Mulligan (2-0) getting credit for the win.
The Redbirds (32-25, 70-67) host the Arkansas Travelers on Saturday at 6:10pm, as the final home stand of the regular season continues. Don't forget about Saturday's free concert, featuring Chris and Conrad, taking place in front of the Hammons Field Plaza at 4:30pm.
Right-hander Brandon Dickson (8-10) will toe the rubber for Springfield on Saturday, while Arkansas sends Tim Kiely (4-3) to the mound. Game time is 6:10pm and tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
