
WhiteWings Vanquish Roadrunners

EDINBURG - After losing their first 11 meetings with the Edinburg Roadrunners this season, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the Roadrunners 9-4 in seven innings in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The WhiteWings (21-31) jumped on Tim Haines (4-5) right away. Javis Diaz led off with a single and stole second. One batter later, Yeurys Tejeda hit an RBI-double. With two outs, Welington Dotel reached on an error to allow Tejeda to score. Arlon Quiroz followed with an RBI-double to make it 3-0.
Justin Phillips retired the first five Roadrunners (33-18) he faced, but after walking Carlos Hereaud on a 3-2 pitch, Ambiorix Concepcion belted his seventh home run of the season to make it 3-2.
Eric Gonzalez led off the fourth by reaching on a two-base error and scoring on an RBI-single by Welinson Baez. After a sacrifice bunt and an out, Roberto Rodriguez hit an RBI-double to make it 5-2.
Robert Matlock led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to knock out Phillips. Ruben De La Rosa came in for his WhiteWings debut, and after recording the first out, allowed a home run to Hernandez to make it 5-4.
The WhiteWings scored four runs in the top of seventh to put the game out of reach.
Mickey Cassidy (1-0) recorded the final seven outs for his first win.
The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game two of this doubleheader in about 30 minutes. Right-hander David Cross (2-5) is expected to pitch for the WhtieWings.
