Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas got a first-class pitching performance from Ryan Mitchell on Saturday night as he allowed only four hits and no earned runs while striking out eight and walking none in seven innings for an 8-6 win over the Laredo Broncos in front of 1,903 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.
Mitchell (5-2) retired the first six batters and later retired 12 in-a-row for his first win against the Broncos. Laredo reliever Brian Buchanan (5-3) got the loss as he allowed the go-ahead runs to reach in the seventh. Dillas closer Ramon Geronimo got his 13th save as he retired all three batters he faced in the ninth.
Amarillo took the lead in the second inning as Stephen Douglas reached on an error and stole second. Alberto Cruz walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Brian Bueno reached on an error to score Douglas while Jermel Lomack hit a fielder's choice that scored Cruz for a 2-0 lead.
Laredo tied the game in the third as DJ Dixon singled, went to second as Doug Thennis reached on an error, while both runners went to third on a pass ball. Michael Murphy hit a two-run, two-out single to score both runners for a 2-2 tie game.
Mitchell and Laredo starter Robert Roth kept each team off the board until the Dillas got back in the lead in the seventh. Carlos Figueroa and Andrew Wong led off with singles, while Cruz was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Rob Recuenco sent the first pitch he saw to the right-center field gap for a bases-clearing three-RBI triple. Recuenco would score on a Lomack RBI sacrifice fly for a 6-2 Dillas lead.
Laredo added two runs in the eighth as Salvador Paniagua and Jonathan Cisneros hit RBI singles for a two-run game. Amarillo responded with two runs in the bottom half as Cruz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Recuenco hit a sacrifice fly for a 8-4 lead.
Broncos outfielder Doug Thennis hit a two-run homerun off reliever Earl Oakes in the ninth, but Geronimo shut the door on the comeback with a flyout and two strikeouts to end the game with the Dillas winning 8-6.
With the win, the Dillas improve to 32-23 while the Broncos fall to 26-30.
