Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

EDINBURG - The top two hitters in the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings batting order reached base in 10-of-11 plate appearances to spark a 7-3 victory over the McAllen Thunder Thursday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The win snaps a five-game skid for the first place-WhiteWings (13-9).

Francisco Santana led off the game with a triple against Kurt Houck (2-2). Antonio DeJesus followed with an RBI-single and Gabriel Ortiz drove DeJesus home later in the inning to give the WhiteWings a 2-0 lead.

Santana finished 5-for-6 with two runs scored and one driven in while DeJesus was 2-for-2 with three walks, two RBI and one run scored.

The Thunder (11-11) responded against Luis Chirinos (2-0) in the bottom of the inning. Zach Mandelblatt drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pick-off throw and scored on a one-out single by Yaibel Tamayo to make it 2-1.

That was it against Chirinos, who struck out six while scattering three hits and three walks in five and two-thirds innings. He has yet to allow an earned run in 17.1 innings.

A pair of errors by Tamayo at shortstop opened up a four-run third for the WhiteWings. Edgar Trejo and Wesley Dimitt reached on those errors. With two outs, Brandon Decker and Santana hit RBI-single, DeJesus walked and Leivi Ventura hit a two-run single to make it 6-1.

DeJesus added an RBI-single in the seventh against Jason Oatman to put the WhiteWings up 7-1.

Edgar Martinez recorded the final two outs for his league-leading ninth save.

The WhiteWings and Thunder play games three and four of this four-game series in a doubleheader of seven inning games on Friday at 6:00 p.m. Right-hander Andy Wells (2-1, 3.27) and left-hander Chase Davenport (1-2, 4.95) are expected to face right-handers Justin Jordan (1-4, 6.75) and Shawn Wilyman (0-0, 4.50).
