Lake County Fielders News Release

Calgary, Alberta, Canada (June 15, 2011) - On an overcast Wednesday afternoon, the Lake County Fielders (13-6) traded leads with the Calgary Vipers (10-9), but managed to hold off the snakes for an 8-7 win.

The Fielders took the lead in the top of the 1st inning for the second straight game. Quentin Luquette started the game with a double and Rex Rundgren followed with a single. A wild pitch from Calgary starting pitcher Dusty Gober allowed Luquette to score the game's first run, giving Lake County a 1-0 lead.

But, also for the second straight game, the Vipers countered with scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning. Centerfielder Jonny Kaplan led off the inning with a double and scored on first baseman Andy Jenkins' RBI single. The Vipers scored two more in the bottom of the 2nd inning on an RBI triple from second baseman Jimmy Rohan and an RBI single from shortstop Wilver Perez, to give the Vipers a 3-1 lead.

It took some two-out action for the Fielders to tie the game in the top of the 3rd inning. Rundgren drew a walk and came home to score on Argelis Nunez's deep double to center field. Nunez came in to score on an RBI single by C.J. Ziegler to tie the game at 3-3.

Following that top of the 3rd inning, the lead changed hands three times. Calgary quickly reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Left fielder Drew Miller hit a solo home run, his eighth of the season, over the wall in right-center field to make it 4-3 Calgary. The Fielders got their second lead of the game when Luquette hit a two-run double in the top of the 4th inning, to make it 5-4 Lake County. Calgary took it back following an RBI single from Wilver Perez and an RBI double by Jenkins, ending the 4th inning with a 6-5 lead.

The score remained unchanged for two innings, until the Fielders had a chance to hit off newly-signed Viper reliever Edward Valdez in the top of the 7th inning. Rundgren started off the top of the 7th with a double that dropped in fair territory in right field. Ziegler brought home Rundgren with a single off the glove of Calgary third baseman Louie Templeton. Two batters later, it was an error by Templeton off the bat of Brad Payne that put runners at the corners with two out. The error allowed Patrick Brooks to step to the plate, where he came up with a clutch two-run single to give the Fielders an 8-6 lead.

The three-run top of the 7th inning for the Fielders lasted long enough for pitching coach/closer Chris Thompson to enter the bottom of the 9th inning with a two-run lead. Thompson gave up a leadoff triple to Rohan, who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. But, that was the only blip during Thompson's one inning of work as he held on to earn his eighth save of the season.

The Fielders will look to win their second in a row in game three of the fou-game series against the Calgary Vipers on Thursday night. First pitch for Thursday's game is scheduled for 6:30pm local (7:30pm central). You can listen to the game on 1220 AM WKRS or online at fieldersbaseball.com or wkrs.com.
