WhiteWings Starter Goes Distance for Second-Straight Game

HARLINGEN - After Andres Rosales went the distance on Saturday, David Cross (6-5) pitched all nine innings, striking out seven while allowing six hits and four walks as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the San Angelo Colts 6-1 on Sunday at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings (34-35) are winners of three-straight and 15 of their last 20 games.

The WhiteWings got on the board against Ezequiel Astacio (6-5) in the bottom of the third. Eric Gonzalez and Luany Sanchez led off with singles. After a sacrifice bunt, Javis Diaz hit an RBI-single, Domenic Di Ricco hit an RBI-ground out and Yeurys Tejeda hit an RBI-triple to make it 3-0.

Arlon Quiroz drew a one-out walk and stole second in the bottom of the fourth. Sanchez hit a two-out single to make it 4-0.

The Colts (36-34) responded against Cross in the top of the fifth. Landon Camp led off with a single, and one out later, David Cardona singled, moving Camp to third. Butch Ballez followed with an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 4-1.

The WhiteWings got that run back in the bottom of the fifth when, with two outs, Tejeda singled and Welinson Baez hit an RBI-double to make it 5-1.

Quiroz led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk, stole second and scored on a one-out single by Roberto Rodriguez to knock out Astacio and make the score 6-1 WhiteWings.

The WhiteWings and Colts play game three of this four-game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. The WhiteWings are holding a free youth clinic on the field at 5:00 p.m. with WhiteWings players and coaches. All participants will receive a free ticket to the game. Gates open at 4:45 for the clinic and 6:05 for the game. Right-hander Misael DeJesus (4-5) is expected to face right-hander Chandler Barnard (6-2).

The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas that has sent two players to Major League Baseball in Edwar Ramirez (New York Yankees) and Robinson Cancel (New York Mets). In its fifth season, the United League is in the midst of a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, Robstown and San Angelo.
