WhiteWings Sign Pair of Pitchers

Harlingen - United League Baseball's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today that they have signed left-handed pitcher Carlos Artiles (5-11, 165), who pitched for the team last year, and right-handed pitcher Mickey Cassidy (6-1, 190, University of St. Francis).

Artiles started the season with the Tijuana Cimarrones (Golden Baseball League), going 0-2 with an ERA of 18.00. In games games (one start), he struck out five while walking 13 and giving up 12 hits in eight innings. Artiles was 2-3 with a 2.75 ERA for the WhiteWings last season in seven games (six starts), while allowing just under one hit per inning. Artiles pitched in the New York Yankees system from 2000-through-2005, reaching AAA Columbus (International League) in his final season, giving up one run on four hits in two innings. He picked up a save in one of his two outings for Columbus. For his career, Artiles is 15-19 with a 4.08 ERA. He has struck out 216 while walking 165 in 266.1 innings.

Cassidy opened the season with the Pittsfield Colonials (Can-Am League), giving up four earned runs in 3.2 innings. He began his professional career with Bay Area (Continental League) last year, going 1-0 with one save and a 2.25 ERA in 11 relief appearances. He gave up 13 hits and four walks while striking out seven in 12 innings.
