
Roadrunners Drop Series to Broncos

LAREDO, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners lost their second series of the season to the Laredo Broncos after an 11-5 loss Tuesday night at Veterans Field. Edinburg is now 4-8 against the Broncos this season after dropping three of the last four games.
The Roadrunners (32-17) got on the board in the second inning against Santo Hernandez (5-3). Robert Matlock led off with a single then moved to second after Vincent Blue singled to center. A walk to Osiel Flores loaded the bases and Wilmer Pino hit a two-run single scoring Matlock and Blue. Pino then stole second base and a throwing error by Salvador Paniagua allowed Flores to score making it 3-0 Edinburg.
Laredo (25-28) got a run back in the bottom of the second against Edinburg starter Eric Montoya (6-2). A sacrifice fly by Nick Mahin allowed Paniagua to score cutting the Roadrunners lead 3-1.
D.J. Dixon was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fifth then moved to second after a throwing error by the Roadrunners defense. After a single by Jason Diaz that loaded the bases, Michael Murphy hit an RBI single to right field scoring Dixon from third. Kenneth Gilbert followed with a two-run double that scored Doug Thennis and Diaz from second and third. Paniagua capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly that allowed Murphy to score giving the Broncos the 5-3 lead.
Two errors in the bottom of the seventh by the Roadrunners loaded the bases for Mahin who hit a three-run triple scoring Murphy, Gilbert, and Paniagua extending the Broncos lead 8-3.
Laredo added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run double by Gilbert making it 11-3.
A single by Matlock started the top of the ninth against Thomas Vessella. After moving to second on a ground out, Matlock went to third on Blue's double to left. Flores then hit an RBI ground out that allowed Matlock to score. Melvin Perez followed with an RBI single to center scoring Blue from second making it 11-5 Broncos. Vessella got the final out giving Laredo the 11-5 victory.
The Roadrunners have Wednesday off before hosting the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings for five games starting on Thursday at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Wardell Starling (6-1) is expected to face Andres Rosales (3-3) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
