WhiteWings' Rally Falls Short

HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored seven runs in the eighth inning and one more in the ninth, but stranded the tying run at second base in a 15-14 loss to the Laredo Broncos on Friday at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings' (45-44) magic number to clinch a playoff spot remains two. Any combination of WhiteWings wins and San Angelo Colts losses that adds up that adds up to two over the course of the rest of the season will result in the WhiteWings clinching their first playoff spot since 2007.

Trailing 15-6, the WhiteWings loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Javis Diaz hit an RBI infield-single that scored an additional run after the throw to first got away. Yuki Matsumoto hit an RBI-single and Yeurys Tejeda hit a sacrifice fly. Leivi Ventura hit his league record-tying 24th home run of the season to knock out James Maxwell. Reyes Dorado came in and allowed Brian Nichols' 18th home run of the season before escaping the inning with a 15-13 lead.

After Mickey Cassidy pitched a scoreless top of the ninth, the WhiteWings put two on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to set-up a Matsumoto RBI-single, but Tejeda grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game as Dorado picked up his eighth save.

The Broncos (46-43) loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first against Johnny Montoya. Salvador Paniagua walked to force-in a run and Carlos Arroyo hit a two-run single to knock out Montoya. Nick Mahin hit an RBI-single against Miguel Matos (4-3) to make it 4-0.

The WhiteWings responded against Juan Peralta right away. Diaz led off the bottom of the first with his seventh home run. Luany Sanchez and Tejeda followed with singles. One out later, Nichols hit an RBI-single and Welington Dotel reached on an infield-single to load the bases. Arlon Quiroz walked to force-in a run. Eric Gonzalez followed by hitting a grounder to third. The throw to the plate was in time for the out, but the throw to first sailed into right field, allowing two runs to scored to give the WhiteWings a 5-4 lead.

Maiko Loyola led off the top of the second with a double. After a sacrifice bunt, D.J. Dixon hit an RBI-single. After a groundout moved Dixon to second, Jonathan Cisneros hit an RBI-single to knock out Matos. Paniagua lined a sharp single to centerfield against Ruben De La Rosa that Diaz couldn't handle, allowing Cisneros to score, and Arroyo hit his 11th home run of the season to make it 9-5 Broncos.

Roberto Rodriguez led off the bottom of the fourth with a four-pitch walk against Maximino de la Cruz (1-3). One out later, Sanchez doubled and Tejeda hit an RBI-single to bring the WhiteWings within 9-6.

Dixon hit a two-run double and Jonel Pacheco hit his sixth home run to knock out De La Rosa in the sixth. Luis Montano came in and allowed two more runs as the Broncos batted around to take a 15-6 lead.

The WhiteWings travel to Edinburg Baseball Stadium for the first of three games in two days against the Edinburg Roadrunners on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander David Cross (6-5) is expected to face right-hander Eric Montoya (9-5).
