Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas got one step closer to clinching the regular-season United League title with starting pitcher Ronald Lowe allowing only four runs off six hits in six-and-two-thirds innings as the Dillas defeated the Edinburg Roadrunners 5-4 on Friday night in front of 2,103 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.
Lowe (7-3) only struck out three batters, but only walked one in the effort. Roadrunners starter Wardell Starling (8-3) got the loss, allowing five runs and nine hits in five innings pitched. Amarillo reliever Tyler Pearson got his fourth save of the season, retiring the Roadrunners in the ninth.
The Dillas got on the board first in the second inning as Alberto Cruz led off with a triple. Rob Recuenco walked and stole second but the throw to second went into the outfield to score Cruz from third for a 1-0 advantage.
Edinburg evened the score in the fourth as Felix Molina reached on an error, went to second on a Nelson Teilon single and scored on a Daryl Jones RBI double for a 1-1 tie game.
Amarillo broke through again in the fifth as Carlos Figueroa hit a one-out single, went to second on a Julio Martinez walk and scored on a fielder's choice error during a Stephen Douglas at-bat to retake the lead. Cruz doubled to score Douglas while Recuenco and Kevin Butler followed with subsequent RBI singles for a 5-1 lead.
The Roadrunners scored again in the seventh as Wilson Batista and Carlos Hereaud both hit one-out singles. Eddie Wilson followed with a two-RBI double to pull the gap to two. Robert Matlock grounded out to move Wilson to third and Wilmer Pino singled to bring him home for a 5-4 deficit.
Dillas reliever Corey Bass shut down the Roadrunners in the remainder of the seventh and eighth innings, while Pearson finished them off in the ninth for a 5-4 victory.
