San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX - The San Angelo Colts kept their slim playoff chances alive on Thursday night at Foster Field as they swept a doubleheader from the Coastal Bend Thunder, 11-2 in game one, and 2-1 in eight innings in game two. The second game ended on a walk-off two-run homerun by shortstop Butch Ballez (6).
Game one started well for Coastal Bend as they drew first blood with an RBI double from catcher Gianican Rosa to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
After that, however, it was all San Angelo as the Colts struck for eight consecutive runs in innings 2-4 to take a commanding 8-1 lead. In the bottom of the second, San Angelo broke out on top thanks to a two-run double from centerfielder Ronnie Gaines. The Colts added two more in the third on a sac-fly from first-baseman Josh Collazo, and a bases-loaded walk to catcher Stephen Yoo to extend the lead to 4-1.
San Angelo then broke the game open with a four-run fourth, as left-fielder Alex Fernandez and Yoo each drove in two runs with singles to put the game out of reach.
Coastal Bend would get a run back on a wild pitch from San Angelo starter Logan Williamson, which scored centerfielder Lamar Guy from third. However, the Colts responded the following inning with a three-run blast from Collazo (15) to give the Colts the final count of 11-2.
For game one, Collazo led the way for San Angelo by going 1-2 with a homer, sac-fly, four RBI, and two runs scored. Yoo also chipped in by going 2-3 with two singles and three RBI. Fernandez also singled, drove in two runs, and scored three times to aid the Colts' cause. Right-fielder Juan Cabrera went 2-3 with a single and double for Coastal Bend.
Logan Williamson (3-2) got the win as he went the distance allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out three. Jacob Liedka (1-5) took the loss for Coastal Bend as he allowed six runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work. He also walked four and struck out one.
The second game was a pitcher's duel that saw starters Chandler Barnard of the Colts and Hunter Haggerty of the Thunder match each other zero for zero through the game's first seven innings. In the eighth, the Thunder would plate a run on a fielding error by Ballez, which scored Ron Fenwick from third and gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
However, in the bottom-half, the Colts got a runner to third with one out. With the count 0-1Ballez turned on a Haggerty fastball, which ended the game and gave the Colts their second doubleheader sweep of the year over the Thunder.
Getting the win for San Angelo was Barnard (8-3) who went eight sensational innings, while allowing an unearned run on four hits and striking out a season-high 10 batters. Haggerty (0-2) was the tough-luck loser for Coastal Bend as he went 7.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out three.
Offensively, Ballez went 1-4 in game two with the homer to lead San Angelo, while Rosa went 2-4 in the second game and 3-7 for the doubleheader with a double and RBI.
With the win and Laredo's victory over Rio Grande Valley, the Colts now find themselves 2.5 games behind both the Broncos and White Wings for the final two playoff spots in the ULB standings with four games left to play. The magic number for the Broncos and White Wings to clinch playoff spots is down to two.
The Colts and Thunder will wrap-up their four-game series on Friday with first-pitch slated for 7:05 as the Colts look to take three of four games. Brian Henschel (6-8, 6.06 ERA) will pitch for the Colts against southpaw Luis Martinez (1-2, 4.80 ERA) of the Thunder. Friday will also be Youth Glove Giveaway Night presented by Concho Valley Partnership as fans 12-and-under will receive a free baseball mitt as they enter the gate. The broadcast of the game begins with the Kemps Pregame Show at 5:50, and can be heard on 1260 KKSA.
