Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Amarillo, TX - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (36-31, 7-11) played home run derby as they beat the Amarillo Dillas (38-31, 12-7) 9-3 tonight at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.

The WhiteWings got things going right away against Dario Ferrand (0-7) in the first as Bub Bergstrom led off with a bunt single and Omar Bramasco singled. Miguel Peguero hit an RBI-single and Ryan Fox hit an RBI-single to make it 2-0 before an out had been recorded.

In the second, Kevin Griffin walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Bergstrom to make it 3-0.

Miguel Peguero led off the third with his fourth home run of the season to make it 4-0.

The Dillas responded in the bottom of the frame against Joe Rogers (9-2) as Kevin Moore led off with a walk and Josh Ashton followed with a single to center, which Bergstrom bobbled, allowing both runners to advance. Jonathan Reynoso followed with a grounder to third that Fox came home on to nail Moore. Jordan Ramos salvaged the inning with a two-run double to make it 4-2.

The WhiteWings continued to play long ball in the fourth as Sam McLain led off with his fifth home run of the season. One out later, Teodoro Encarnaction hit a long shot off the scoreboard high above the right field wall, his second of the season, to make it 6-2.

In the fifth, Brian Nichols hit a two-out single and stole second. Alejandro Martinez followed with an RBI-double, giving every WhiteWing a hit, to make it 7-2.

The Dillas responded in the bottom of the frame as Moore led off with a walk and Ashton followed with a double. After a big strikeout of Reynoso, Ramos hit a grounder to second to get the run in and make it 7-3.

That was all they would get against Rogers, though, as he threw his league-leading fourth complete game of the season, striking out 11 while allowing just six hits and walking two.

The WhiteWings though, continued the scoring party in the sixth as Griffin led off with a walk and moved to second on a ground out. Bergstrom hit an RBI-single to knock out Ferrand. Chris Waters came in and gave up an RBI-double to Omar Bramasco, making it 9-3.

Ferrand ended up going five and a third innings, allowing nine runs on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The WhiteWings head to Laredo tomorrow night at 7:30 for the first of four. Danny Bonilla (2-6) will start for the WhiteWings.
