WhiteWings Pass Broncos in Standings Again

LAREDO - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings moved ahead of the Laredo Broncos in the United League Baseball standings for possession of the fourth and final playoff spot following an 8-7 win on Thursday at Veterans Field.

The WhiteWings (25-32) jumped on Robert Roth (1-2) in the top of the first. Javis Diaz led off the game with a triple and Agustin Septimo followed with an RBI-groundout. After that, Yeurys Tejeda singled, Welinson Baez walked, Welington Dotel hit a two-run triple and Arlon Quiroz hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Dotel finished 5-for-5 with three RBI, two runs scored and a home run short of the cycle.

The Broncos (27-33) responded against David Cross (4-5) in the bottom of the second when Salvador Paniagua hit his 15th home run of the season to make it 4-1.

Quiroz responded with a long home run of his own, a two-run shot and hit ninth of the season, to make it 6-1 in the top of the third.

Ryan Flynn led off the bottom of the third with a single and scored on a triple by Jason Diaz to bring the Broncos within 6-2.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Carlos Arroyo singled and stole second. Doug Thennis singled to put runners on the corners. A double-steal scored Arroyo and Flynn hit an RBI-single to bring the Broncos within 6-4.

Luany Sanchez led off the top of the eighth with a walk to knock out reliever Shane Cox. One out later, Thomas Vessella allowed singles to Diaz and Septimo to score Sanchez. James Maxwell came in, allowed a single to Tejeda to load the bases, and, one out later. Welington Dotel beat out a grounder to third to drive in Diaz, making it 8-4 WhiteWings.

The Broncos scored three runs against four different WhiteWings pitchers, but Eric Gonzalez, making his second appearance on the mound this season, stranded the bases loaded with the WhiteWings up 8-7.

Miguel Matos pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The WhiteWings return home to host the Amarillo Dillas in game one of a five-game series on Fan Fly Away Friday, presented by Allegiant Air, Univision, Que Pasa and Jose 101 at 7:05 p.m., when one lucky fan will win two free round trip tickets on Allegiant Air. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Misael DeJesus (3-4) is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings.
