
Broncos Rally Falls Short in Ninth, Fall to Wingnuts 8-7

The Broncos (27-34) fell behind 6-1 early to the Wings (26-32) only to come storming back in the eighth inning, but ultimately fall 8-7 in the series finale. The Wings with the victory rake over sole possession of fourth place by a half game.
RHP Robert Roth (1-2) took the mound for Laredo in the series finale against the White Wings, who sent RHP David Cross (4-5) to the mound at Veterans Field.
The White Wings, trying to win the series, opened the game with a bang when Javis Diaz tripled to lead off the first inning. Agustin Septimo picked up RBI number one on the season on a ground out and gave the White Wings a 1-0 lead. After a single and a walk to the next two hitters, Welington Dotel lined a triple into the gap and brought everybody home making the score 3-0 White Wings. Arlon Quiroz the next batter hit a sacrifice fly to plate the Wings fourth run of the inning and gave them the 4-0 lead.
The Broncos got on the board in the bottom of the second when Salvador Paniagua hit his 15th home run of the season, picking up RBI number 49 in 2010 and making the score 4-1 White Wings.
In the top of the third the Wings added to their lead when Arlon Quiroz crushed a ball over the left field wall for a two run home run after a Wington Dotel single with two outs and the White Wings lead was 6-1.
Ryan Flynn, celebrating his 25th birthday, reached on an infield single t start the bottom of the third. Jason Diaz then knocked him home for an RBI when he tripled one batter later and the score was 6-2 White Wings.
Roth started the fourth inning, after retiring the first two batters of the inning, one on a strike out and one on a caught stealing, Roth was lifted for the lefty Michael Haddad (0-0). Haddad threw three pitches and ended the inning.
Roth, for the Broncos goes 3.2 innings pitched, allowing seven hits, six runs (all earned) walking two and striking out three.
David Cross the starter for the White Wings pitched 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs (all earned) he walked one and struck out two.
Cross ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. With one out Carlos Arroyo singled and stole second base. Doug Thennis then singled Arroyo to third base to put runners on the corners. With Flynn at the plate, Thennis broke for second base. Luany Sanchez, the White Wings catcher threw to the bag and Arroyo broke from third. The throw back to the plate beat Arroyo but he knocked the ball out of the glove of Sanchez and scored the Broncos third run of the game. Fynn then knocked in Thennis from third to make the score 6-4 White Wings.
In the top of the eighth with RHP Shane Cox (0-0) on the mound for the Broncos Luany Sanchez took a lead off walk. The Broncos went to the bullpen and brought in the lefty Thomas Vessella. Vessella faced three batters, striking out one and allowing two singles, the second of which scored Sanchez and gave the Wings a 7-4 lead. RHP James Maxwell came into the game and allowed an infield RBI single with the bases loaded to plate the eighth run for Wings and gave them an 8-4 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth the Broncos mounted their comeback attempt. Paniagua walked to start the inning, followed by a Jonathan Cisneros double. Mahin struck out against RHP Mickey Cassidy (0-0) for the first out. LHP Luis Martinez came into the game and gave up a two run double to Carlos Arroyo to make the score 8-6 White Wings. Flynn knocked in another run to cut the Wings lead to 8-7 heading to the ninth.
Ryan Flynn, on his birthday, turned in a 4 for 4 day with two RBI and a run scored.
Maxwell remained on the mound and pitched a perfect ninth to get the Broncos back into the dugout with a chance to tie.
RHP Miguel Matos (3-3) came on in the ninth and retired the Broncos in order to earn his first save of the year.
