
Batista Lifts Roadrunners Past Thunder

EDINBURG, Texas---Wilson Batista went 4-for-5 with three doubles and five RBIs helping the Edinburg Roadrunners defeat the Coastal Bend Thunder 12-6 Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium in front of 5,409 in attendance.
With the win, Edinburg keeps a one game lead over the Amarillo Dillas for first place in the United League standings.
The Thunder (22-37) scored against Mike Reeves in the top of the first. Back-to-back two-out singles by Levy Ventura and Brian Nichols put runners on the corners. Alex Fernandez followed with an RBI double scoring Ventura and giving Coastal Bend the 1-0 lead.
The Roadrunners (35-21) answered back in the bottom of the first against Jake Liedka (0-2). Felix Molina started things with a walk and then stole second. One out later, Ambiorix Concepcion was walked. Wilson Batista then hit a two-run double to deep left center field allowing Molina and Concepcion to score giving Edinburg the 2-1 lead.
Mike Lewis led off the top of the second with a double and then moved to third after a ground out by Patty Matera. Dustin Smith followed with an RBI ground out to second base that allowed Lewis to score tying the game at two.
In the top of the fourth, an RBI infield single by Ron Fenwick allowed Matera, who hit a triple, to score from third giving the Thunder the 3-2 lead.
Edinburg fired back in the bottom of the eighth sending thirteen batters to the plate. A walk to Concepcion started the inning and Batista followed with his second double of the game allowing Concepcion to score tying the game at three. Carlos Hereaud followed with an RBI double to left driving in Batista from second. After a two-out walk to Osiel Flores, Wilmer Pino hit an RBI double scoring Hereaud from third. Molina then walked and with Nelson Teilon at the plate, a passed ball allowed Flores to score the fourth run of the inning. With the bases loaded, a fielding error allowed Molina and Teilon to score. Batista then hit his second RBI of the inning that allowed Concepcion to score making it 10-3 Roadrunners.
An infield hit by Smith started the top of the sixth for the Thunder and a throwing error allowed him to go to second. Fenwick followed with an RBI single to center scoring Smith from second and cutting the Roadrunners lead 10-4.
In the top of the seventh, an RBI double by Matera allowed Lewis to score from first. After moving to third on a throwing error, Matera came into score on an RBI infield single by Smith making it 10-6 Edinburg.
The Roadrunners added some insurance runs in the ninth with a solo home run by Molina, his third of the season. Concepcion reached on fielding error, moved to second on wild pitch and then came into score on an RBI double by Batista extending Edinburg's lead 12-6.
Julio Castro struck out the side in the ninth giving Edinburg the 12-6 victory.
Aaron Guerra (4-1) picked up his fourth win of the season after pitching three and a third innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits and striking out four.
The Roadrunners hit the road for a four-game series against the San Angelo Colts starting Friday night at Foster Field. Tim Haines (4-5) is expected to face Chandler Barnard (4-2) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
